With all the buzz about the new S900, 700, 500 who has decided to stay put with their 3k? And why?

Let's keep it civil, please.

Although there are many improvements on the "S" series , I wish I woulld have bought a new Y3K a few months ago when you could.

After reading all the reviews about the S900 , there was no mention about rubber buttons.

There was mention of "rubber like" buttons , but no acttuly came out and said " hey this thing has rubber buttons" !!

I have had many Yamaha`s in the past with rubber buttons and although they worked , my Y2K with hard plastic buttons was way better , not as far as sound , just as far as control.

I have been asking all over the place to try to find a "brand new sealed in box" Y3K and nothing except for eBay.

Cassp,

I have a good friend who held on to his 3k because he felt the upgrade was of no real use to him.

He plays guitar and sings along with SMF files that he makes himself.

Because he rarely, if ever, uses RH voices for instrumentals, it was not beneficial to buy an S900.

If great RH voices are important to you, then the S900 is a terrific buy...otherwise the 3k can do the job just fine.

I still have my old 3k, although it is now for backup and is in storage, and even though it doesn't have the neat rubber buttons like the S900...it still is a fine instrument.

Ian

I still have a pair of 3000s, both of which will not be replaced by the S-900. Don't get me wrong. The S-900 is a fantastic machine with loads of neat features. However, the upgrade is not sufficient for me to spring for a pair of 900s.

As for the rubber buttons, I think there is a reason behind them. I've personally seen lots of standard buttons destroyed by heavy-handed performers, guys that punch the buttons as if they were hitting them with a ballpean hammer. The switching mechanism beneath nearly every keyboard button is nothing more than a plastic bubble with a soft contact imbedded in the bubble material. Once that bubble is mashed flat with a fair degree of force, there's no way to repair it. Usually, the entire board must be replaced. The rubber buttons merely provide an added cushion of protection which will likely add to the longevity of the switch mechanism. Makes perfectly good sense to switch to a softer material.

Cheers,

Gary
