Hi folks,

Since a few weeks I sam exploring possibilities to compose songs on an arranger. I would have gone for the pa1x if there was a module version. Now I am trying the software realtime arranger route with my midiguitar, means: hypersonic 2 with Livestyler or One man band.
I encountered some problems with this setup:
1. Livestyler (newest demoversion) tends to freeze when closing or opening.
2. Whe Livestyler loads a new style, it sends the gm messages to Hypersonic to load the right sounds. Well, sometimes it does, sometimes not.
3. OMB does not send midi data to Hypersonic. I switched hypersonic to GM, and reset the midi, also set the right midi-in channel under preferences, and the right midi-out channel in OMB. No sound, while on the other hand the keyboard of Hypersonic, when touched with the cursor sounds.
4. OMB does not seem to send gm-data to Hypersonic when a new style is loaded. Hypersonic does not load the appropriate sounds to the channels.
The midi connections are done via midiyoke.

I am so fed up with this.HS sdeems to work fine, bit LS and OMB don´t. Any ideas whats going wrong?

Heinrich

I had no problem hooking OMB up from my laptop to my guitarist's computer via midi and using HS2 or Bandstand. I don't have HS2 right now, but every other module(s) I use with OMB works fine.

I also used to use Midiyoke, but have since replaced it with Maple Midi for my in computer midi interface. It does the same thing, but with less ports ( 4 instead of 8 ). I found that for me 8 ports is overkill. Before XP came out, I was able to adjust the amount of midiports in midiyoke, but with the XP version I could no longer do that.

If you can't get it to work, you can email me, and if necessary we can exchange phone #s. I may be able to walk you through whatever problems you might be having.

Thanks Bluezplayer,

I allways appreciated your posts. Seems we use the same stuff to reach similar musical goals. Ahem... This sounds so elaborated. I will tray midi maple and let you know whats happening. Maybe I need some help on the phone.
Very interesting that you find it easier to use the FL Studio than the Sequencer of the Motif. I will have a look at that.

I can deeply recommend Hypersonic 2. Only thing thats annoying is, you need to tweak the styles a lot. Anybody here who has written a patch for tyros or psr styles that can be used as midi message fpr hypersonic so the right sounds are loaded - not only the gm sounds of course.

And it seems that percussion like congas do not sound anymore or are left out when you switch the GM drum set to one of the many other drum sets in hypersonic 2. Does this mean you have to build up the drum kits from scratch bedcause there are some sounds missing in non-gm-kits?

Please enlighten me...

All the best

Heinrich

Hi
xg drum mapping ( which psr styles use) & gm mapping , are not 100% compatible. If you can edit drum sets in Hypersonic 2, it may be easier in the long run to do so if you plan on using a lot of psr styles.
PSR manuals are downloadable from the net & they have the drum maps in them.
You probably wouldn't need to start from scratch, just remap the few that aren't correct.
Other than that, you'd have to edit the styles.
Stylemaker__ Track __Convert.
Here you can convert one type of drum into another & alter the velocity as well.

Another option would be to event edit each of the drum tracks ( very time consuming).

Another approach may be to contact Michael P. Bedesem and have him modify his Midi Player program to change the drum mapping to fit the GM2 standard and tranferring all drum tracks to channel 10. He did that for me and it worked well for use with Bandstand. When I use SGM180 I still get the occasional referee whistle in some of the PSR styles. I should contact Michael concerning this as well. With Michael's Midi Player the conversion of the PSR styles was fast and easy.

Now look at that,

your hints are much appreciated, fellas.

I exchanged midiyoke for midi maple and omb now talks to Hypersonic like to an old friend. Thank you, Bluesplayer!
Now some things I can´t get my head around in hypersonic 2 an OMB:
1. psr-styles usually have drums set on channel 10 and percussion on channel 9, if my memory serves me right. When I look at the OMB-Mixer, there are several tracks with drumvoices (percussion as well) set to channel 10. Thats strange. Why is OMB sending its stuff in a different way than an yammie arranger does? Hypersonic definitely receives no mididata on channel 9 when it receives a psr-style - strange.
2. It seems, the GM drum is the only one of all the drum kits that has the the percussion instruments (conga, bongo etc.) included. When you change the GM kit to another kit, the percussion is missing. Why is that? (In sonicsynth you could do so - load different non-GM-drums instead of the GMs, and it still sounded good and made a nice change to tweak a style). How can different drums in HS be used to overcome this and have the percussion played like in the GM-Kit?
3. When playing psr styles from OMB to Hypersonic 2 (in GM-Mode), the volumes of the channels have to be tweaked a lot and some sounds are not correct at all. Lots of fiddling... Are there any premade patches (XG, sweet voices etc.) that fit better to a - say tyros 2-style - than the GM-settings ion Hypersonic?

I´m coming a long way, but I guess others will be interested in this as well.

Best regards to all

Heinrich

Hi Heinrich,
when you think about it , OMB is not really a software version of a PSR.
It's not a Yamaha program, but created by an individual.
It is able to load .sty files, which is the same format as psr styles and that is a real bonus.

The following are just some of my thoughts
Possibly Jos has done it this way, because more users are likely to use a GM source rather than an xg. GM doesn't recognize drums on any channel other than 10.
For an xg user, there's probably no reason why you wouldn't just change channel 10 back to channel 9 for percussion tracks.

I used to edit my styles to suit my soundsource. Being able to use whatever soundsource you choose , has it's pro's & it's cons.
You have to be prepared to do some work to make the styles sound good for your soundsource. Unfortunately there isn't a softsynth version a Tyros or PSR3000 etc

OMB has all the editing functions onboard to edit the styles & make them sound good.

thanks to all,

Rikki, how do you change channels in the mixer of OMB, so I can assign the some of the percussion drum tracks to channel 9? Mind you, its still a demoversion. I will fork out the money when I know it works out for me.
Frank, yes I might contact Michael Besedem for that.
By the way, are there any patches for hypersonic available - apart from the GM mode - maybe XG or a patch for a psr instruments.
And is there anybody who prefers live-styler over OMB or the other way round?

Many thanks

Heinrich

Hi Heinrich,
I usually edit in the Stylemaker section of the program
Hit CTRLS icon, and change the destination channels.

Will percussion work on midi Channel 9 on
Hypersonic??

I prefer OMB mainly because it's an all in one, style editor, realtime arranger, basic sequencer etc

You can create your own patch map by either editing the existing one ( in notepad, I think)or I beleive you can use the cakewalk ones. I edited one for my DGX a couple of years ago, so it couldn't be all that difficult if I managed it.

Just wondering, can you create a complete new drum map in Hypersonic? and alter the program changes for instruments

ie I have a heap of music files that aren't GM standard, my piano is program change 12 instead of 0,
bass drum is a g5 instead of a c1 etc etc
I've tried editing the files , but it takes too long, so I plan on editing the soundsource instead.
Soundfonts will work, just wondering if Hypersonic 2 may also work?

best wishes
Rikki
