Has anyone tried to replace the internal zip drive on a G-1000? I have been usuing an auxillary drive for sometime pluged in to the SCSI port on the rear of the G-1000 and would like to replace the non-functional one that came with the keyboard.
Thank you,
Tom

Tom, I just changed mine a month or so ago...It's a piece of cake...

Make sure you purchase a SCSI drive..not an IDE..
Match the jump connector on the back end of the drive,,,to the same setting of your current drive...the rest is easy..
Remove the little screws at the front corners near the bender and opposite corner...also from the back edge of the board and the black screws on the bottom..
Flip it over to the top side again and carefully tilt the top cover..careful to rest the back against a wall[ribbon will still be connected..no need to disconnect this].
Remove the 4 screws holding the drive in place as well as the power wire and the SCSI ribbon...That's it!!! Put it back together with the new drive.
As for the drives..
They are getting hard to fine ..that is why I bought a couple for stock...let's see , my first one lasted 7plus years...this one will last another 7 years, and I have another...I am good for another 15 years..By then , maybe I'll replace the G1000!!!

Fran,
Thank you for the tip. I have purchased the replacement drive and will follow your instructions for drive replacement. Too nice a feature to be without.
Question: there is now avaiable a SCSI to USB adapter cable, have you tried attaching a flash drive to a adapter caable to the G-1000?
Regards,
Tom

Tom, I have a Xircom PortGear SCSI to USB adapter..I used it as a means to load a SCSI Zip from a computer with out a Zip drive..I never tried it with another USB device[I think it would require software that the G1000 is not capable]..Any way the Xircom adapter went south and took a Zip 100 drive with it....so there is no way I will gamble with another one with the G1000...

You try it and let me know how it works!!!

Fran,
Sounds risky to me....I don't want my G1000 going South either. I'll stick with the Zip drive.

Tom

Fran,
The first Zip drive arrived last week, upon installation there was a mechanical failure. So I ordered anoter one and this time had success. Yeah !! It's sure nice to have the Zip drive back to store songs and styles again. I think I'll stock up on a few for the future. Thanks for the good advice.
Regards,
Tom
