Yes you can but it depends on which arranger you are using.
I used to use the Korg I-3 with my Roland JV-1080 because I liked the drums Bass and guitars more from the roland so I set up my I-3 to only send to external midi this way it wont play those sounds only through midi out and set up the 1080 in performance mode.
