For a controller, the Midiman Oxygen 8 has a nice feel, is velocity sensitive and is small and portable. It sells for about $140. You can find lots of used tone modules to go with it that'll fit within your budget.

How about the Midiman 8 with an Edirol SD-20?

Frankie, you all ready have good stuff, use the SD1..Play manual bass on it, it lacks nothing...Why not split the board and have a "color" sound available too[organ, piano, guitar, sax or what ever']..That is what I do if I am playing with a drummer...Fran

Doing that right now, but I also play alot of midi files and arranger stuff, which changes the program, so for me to switch back fast enough for the next song tends to hold up the band.

I was also looking at the Yamaha s03,

which sound engine would be better for bass first, and then GM playback second?

Frankie,
You can use ANY keyboard amd midi it INTO the SD1 for the tone. Buy whatever feels good and fits on your stand, and write a patch for sequence play that allows for the bass to be triggered from an external source. It can even be the right hand sound, if you write a patch that has a split built in already.

As an alternative - check out the Roland/Edirol SK880pro - it's 49 keys, 64 voices, and feels great. Should be right in that price range too, I think.

Uncle Dave,

You don't happen to have one?

Is it also
USB?

Also do you think the sound engine in the Edirol Sound Canvas SD-20 is good for live midi playback?

And how do you think it compares to the SK-880pro for sounds?

Frankie, Iuse my G1000 with links turned off. This allows me to play any of my realtime parts live over the sequence[including manual bass]..I would be surprized if the SD1 is not capable of a work around to do the same...Fran

The idea of the extra contoller is cool, Can I set the contoller to just be set on the bass patch always from the SD-1?

So I think I'm gonna use a
USB 49 Keystation from midiman $199.00
Edirol SD-20 for $299.00
a total of $500

This gives me the ability to have a bass part always available and also a great midi file playback system

Should I look into anything else in this price range
