I agree wholeheartedly Scott. It would be very feasible to make a 76 note Tyros 2 with the same overall dimensions of the Tyros 1 or very close to same length anyway. Moving the Mod & Pitch wheels up above the keybed would take some adjustment to get use to but I really see no problem with moving it up except a person would have to reach a little further than them being just to the left of the keybed as they are on the Tyros 1.
Another high priority for Yamaha would be to make the weight comparible to the Tyros 1. If they could keep it within let's say 5 to 10 lbs of the Tyros' 27.38 lbs (12.4 kg) they would definitly have a winner. Btw, it can be done. The Roland Fantom X7 (76 key version) weighs in at exactly 32 lbs. Granted it is no Arranger but why should it be any different for an Arranger? In fact I would be okay if Yamaha made it up to 10 lbs heavier than the Tyros 1. Give em' a little leeway if they need it.
Make it very stylish (no B2 Bomber though Yamaha - Please!)
then I would be okay with 37 lbs.
PS: In my opinion Yamaha is letting gold slip through their fingers and it seems they don't even care.
There is a HUGE market for 76 note keyboards - Workstations AND Arrangers. But the key for a successful 76 key Tyros 2 for Yamaha is:
1. It has to have 76 keys of course.
2. The price has to be lower than the competition. - Note! (VERY IMPORTANT).
3. The sounds and Styles have to be STELLAR obviously.
4. The build quality has to be up to snuff.
We as the owners should not have to be 'beta testers' for shoddy, rushed to the market products. Get it right at the Factory and they've won 90% of the battle. Quality Control should be their number ONE priority.
5. The support has to be, well.. very supportive, and ongoing. Yamaha has to take the initiative when it comes to supporting the Tyros 2, 3, etc. They must not continue to sit back and wait until problems arise before they act and then 'slowly' move to provide a fix by way of an OS update, etc. Correct problems BEFORE they arise. Yamaha should have employees whose only job is to see if they can 'break' a product. In other words they should do extensive testing and re-testing of their products even AFTER the product ships! And then immediately provide a fix. Before users even discover them themselves! It should be embarrassing to them to have the owners finding all of these problems on their products after the fact. But not so apparently.
6. The weight should be within reason and optimally under 40 lbs. If they could make it around 30 lbs they would have an instant hit - with all other things considered of course.
7. Make it very Live performance friendly. They got it right on the Tyros 1 so this should be a no brainer for them. Do the same with the Tyros 2, DUH!
Okay, okay.. I could go on, but these "7" are in my opinion crucial to a successful 76 key Tyros 2, 3, 4, or whatever. The sooner they bring one to market the sooner they will reap the benefits. The ball is in their court though. They have to decide if they want to volley it.
Best regards,
Mike
