"HD" disks don't like being "DD" disks much.
That's why your getting disk errors.
You would think that because a HD disk can store more data than a DD disk that it would be more reliable, but it just doesn't work that way.
Your right about the "lack of" DD disks in stores, but keep looking, you may find some stock, and be perpared to pay more (??) than you would for a pack of HD disks.

It could be worse, it could have used "QuickDisks"
I managed to find that StudioSpares have Sony (may substitute MAxwell) 3.5" DD disks. A pack of ten costs around 3.00 (UKP not including tax + deleivery), so it proves they still exist.
