I have an old Kenmore rather large water softener. Reading the instructions, it looks like they want it to regenerate once every 24 hours. We use 120-140 lbs of salt/mo.

The guy at Lowe's says that WAY too much and that I should be able to place the regeneration into manual mode where it only regenerates when I tell it to.

I am an idiot with this stuff.

Owner manual long gone...

Can anyone comment/help me?

Bill, our system in our Florida home used about 1 bag a month and it was a large system. I think 1 bag is about 40 lbs. (maybe 50???). I'd say you were using WAYYY to much.

It depends completely and entirely on the hardness of the water it needs to process. You must have the hardness tested (measured in grains). We have very hard well water and our demand-type softener regenerates very frequently. We use more that one bag of salt per week, sometime 4-6 per month Each bag is 40 pounds, so that's 160 to 240 pounds per month. If we reduce that, and regenerate less often, the hardness increases and the water quality goes down. We tried it. You need a water quality specialist to do the measurements. Or buy the test kits yourself. This can add up quickly and if you don't know what you are doing, you waste a lot of time and money. You can find a wealth of information about water softening principles on the web.

Yeah, what Tom says makes sense. We were treating already-treated but slightly 'hard' city water and probably required much less.
