I am still not quite getting this. Are you actually feeding a Part from the SMF to the NTA so the MIDI file actually triggers the chords, or are you just playing live the style alongside the SMF and choosing which Parts get heard?

BTW, still can't get at that MP3...

Diki, to answer your question, you can do either. You can either allow the midi file to drive the style, chords included, or you can play along, it's up to you.

But I must mention that the midi file must contain the chords programmed on display otherwise it won't drive all the parts of the style but only the drums. So in other words, if there are no chords on display it will just sync the drums of the style at the correct tempo, but if they do contain chords it will drive all the parts of the style, that's what I've found anyway.

It can produce some very interesting results!

I found a way to get to switch between styles and SMF's on the fly as a workaround for Roland's, but short of patching a MIDI cable between the outs and ins and making sure that ONLY the 'control' track got sent through (doable, mind you), Roland's have pretty much ignored this seemingly useful feature (amongst many others, mind you!).

As I said before, this seems like a very easy way to get the Ketron 'Riff' feature on your arranger, where if you want to jam two handed, MC for a while, play a solo on another instrument, etc., while you are still in style mode, something can take over the chord input duties. Better than Ketron, really, because YOU can determine which chords get played.

But I still miss my Chord Sequencer, just because you could lay down that chord progression on the fly, different every time, etc.. But thanks for showing us about a probable little used feature that has quite incredible possibilities...

Actually, is there anyone here at SZ that makes heavy use of this ability? I'd love to hear it in action, see how and why you use it, etc..

Sounds like something that could replace the chord sequencer! Simply record chord progressions and save it as a song within a registration, than start it when needed. I love the fact that it does not rely on midi cables since I use them for other purposes
(to play a second voice in different harmonic configurations, over midi cables).

I will have to give this a shot on my S910, which I am starting to like more and more.

By the way, has anybody tried to hijack those 5 Extra parts available in the midi settings on yamaha? It seems that there is a possibility to have more than 2 upper parts on the S910. I tried linking the upper 1 to play them, but the issue I am having is that there is no way to change the voices of those internally. I guess a nice external midi controller would do the trick. So how about 7 upper parts on the S910?

Thing is, as long as you can basically get either a style or an SMF in sync start after each other (which you can do to a fashion on the G70), it's not like you actually NEED this feature if you are just looking for a 'riff replacement'. The thing that made the Chord sequencer so awesome was it recorded the changes AS YOU PLAYED THEM, so it was completely interactive, and needed no setting up in advance. By the time you have gone to the bother of creating an SMF with the changes you THINK you might need on them, you might as well just go the whole hog, make a MIDI file of the whole damn thing, and drop Markers in so you can change the arrangement on the fly...

It's a cool feature, but really no substitute for the real thing...
