Well actually, IT didn't die, just the hard drive. Anybody had this happen in a PA1x Pro? I'm assuming this is the problem as the 'disk' button shows 'device not found or unknown format'. Hope it's not some weirdo size or style no longer in production. Is this a complicate job (replacing)? Hope all the software updates are still available; naturally, I have nothing backed up (believe it or not, I've never had a hard drive failure before). This thing has never been outside of my clean, smoke-free, studio. Wonder what happened. Any words of wisdom (except for "I told you so" on the backup) would be welcome. Damn, I hate this. I'm not used to stuff breaking.

Sorry about your problem, also I have no knowledge about the PA's HD or how to

Always sad and not any fun when such things happens, and we have a say here:
It's not the question about if the HD will fail, but more about when it stop function.
Guess this will be more sheldom now when SSD disks take over the boot and OS storage.

Good luck, hope it's easy to restore, and a HD should not be hard to find if it's a
common drive from 2002 or that time. Any specs in the manual?

The Pa1X uses a standard 2.5 Inch IDE HDD.

Replacing the old one with a new one is dead easy and will only take you 10 minutes tops to do.

However, the cable might have just come loose, so make sure you double check that before buying a new one.

As James says, it may be just a loose connection.

Regarding HDD in general, it is good practice to replace them when they have reached 2/3rds of the manufactures warrantee period, as this will reduce the chance of unexpected failure.

There are also 3 other things you need to do with any HDD, which are; Backup, Backup and Backup

Hopefully it is just a loose connection

It's a Toshiba 10GB 3500 RPM Drive. None of this matters though. If you have to buy a new drive all you need to make sure is you get a standard 2.5 Inch IDE.

No need to buy anything big either. Buy the smallest capacity drive you can find actually. These days your likely talking about a 40GB drive. You will never need the space and it's just a waste of money to buy something like a 250GB.

CGiles.You dont ned to replace the hardrive. The same thing happened to mine after 5 years of virtually zero problems. I opened up mine last week when i got the same error message. I disengaged the ribbon connector from the hardrive and then reconnected it. Literally just pull it from the hard drive and then push it back. then close the keyboard. If its a lose connection this should sort it out.

If that doesnt work you can check the hardrive by puchaseing an IDE HDD docking device for about 30 dollars.

hopefully your keyboard can be fixed without losing all your data on the hard drive.

My PA800's not working either. switched it back on after a few weeks break. My LCD screen doesn't light up. ( I tried setting contrast). I'm now taking a longer break than anticipated.

James, thanks for the disk specs. Just ordered two, both 20g, from two different manufacturers. Hopefully, one of them will work.
