Normally I don't believe in reincarnation but that kid has definitely been here before.

Meanwhile, my grandkids couldn't tie their own shoes at age five. Man oh man, that 'gene pool' thing is hard to overcome smile .

it looks and sounds impressive. All the pieces are from last years ABRSM exams grade 5. I am teaching these pieces to my students and none of them can play themlike this including myself ha ha !!

However as impressive as this is i have found that there are numerous young musicians who have been playing literally since they can hold dummy in their hands who sound brilliant but burn out because they have been driven and pushed to play so much that they actually lose the joy of playing and it becomes a burden to them. I hope that doesnt happen to this kid.

lastly many classically trained musicians cant play a lick unless the music is in front of them and they have no real skill for improvising and can actually become musically crippled in terms of their own musical expression and creativity.Thats why i teach a much wider range of music to my students which include the foundational discipline of the piano grades but also the basics of blues, jazz and improvisation. Making music is much more fun than just playing music

Spalding, you hit it "right on". I rent to a guy in my building who plays all saxes, oboe, flute...all reed instruments and is retired from the musicians union on a full pension.

He tried to play with me in a trio, but can't play a note without charts. My B-3, drums and "whatever" plays it fast and loose...trading fours, medleys...key changes...modulations, etc.
He couldn't do any of those things. He was a Vegas pit player (first chair on oboe) for most of the famous shows and entertainers (Sinatra,Barry Manilow and lots of others.

He does a single with tracks now, with sheet music for every tune.

A director of music programs at UK is the same. When he came into town, he asked for a gig, and the country club asked if it would be OK. I said "sure". He got out his music stand. I sent him home.

He still can't play an extemporaneous note if his life depended on it.

Good observation,

Russ

Russ you’re right about the piano being out of tune but I’m the guy that should be saying that (smile)
