The VR700 "super gig rig" is just sitting now and and the portable BK7M setup is also boxed up and on the shelf so its time to move it. I'm a little tight for space too. Between the BK9 and Casio PX350 I've got all the basses covered for now. I also have another set of PK5 pedals for the organ thing on the BK9, two other PA systems, extra stands, benches, cases, etc. Interested ?, talk green to me !

Bill, not sure if this is the best place to ask, but may as well start somewhere...
A friend of mine had a Roland BK-9 home for the week on trial, and he really liked it a lot, even after having had an E-60, which was a great keyboard.
However, he discovered a bit of a problem.
He found an issue with the Chord Sequencer whereas it would not transpose along with the rest of the instrument when doing a modulation (using the transposer) after a first time through, as you may often do in a song.
One of the major reasons he was interested in the BK-9 was because of the Chord Sequencer, so you could say he was very disappointed, and may forgo getting it altogether.
Firstly, is this issue common to all BK-9's or is he having a problem with the specific one he took out...a defective instrument, perhaps?
Secondly, if it is a common OS problem, or bug perhaps, has Roland acknowledged the issue, and, more importantly, have they said a fix is on the way?
Any information would be greatly appreciated, and I apologize in advance for any distraction to your initial post.
Ian

All the chord sequencer does is remember the sequence of the chords! I believe that if you play it back you can hit the transpose button and it will modulate, along with everything else. Good news is that with the BK9 you can SAVE the file, unlike on Korg's. I didn't go into this, but if it saves it as a midi file you could then edit and transpose. May be worth exploring. I think that what your friend needs to do is just record a simple midi file. Don, the issue is that it records the chord sequence, but if you transpose afterwards, it plays them back in the original key, not the new one. You need to re-record the sequence again. He says it really puts a severe limitation on an otherwise very useful feature. Have you tried doing this on the BK-9? He is returning the instrument on Monday if no confirmation and/or solution is forthcoming. He didn't want to need to save the file, but rather use the chord sequencer spontaneously and not, as on the BK-9, to be forced to play/record the Chord Sequence over again in the new key. I will send him to Roland Arranger forum...perhaps he may get further info there, and hopefully be able to keep the instrument. He tried the Korg Chord Sequencer but wasn't pleased with it's slightly more complicated protocol, and also wasn't too keen on the sounds or the overall OS either, as he seems to lean towards Roland having come from the E-60 and a few earlier models. Thanks for the reply. Maybe Bill Lewis can shed more light on it and post it on this forum and therefore inform a broader spectrum of users and potential buyers. Ian

Thanks very much, Bill. He has gone on the Roland Arranger site and he has learned that it is a common problem with all BK-9's, and there is no fix, in at least the immediate future.
Several other issues cropped up as well, which I won't go into here, but suffice to say he is returning it tomorrow, and may go with a Yamaha S950 plus an 88 note digital piano with midi.
He did comment on the BK-9's drawbar organ and said it was about one of the best clonewheels out there, but the other issues were a little too much to deal with for him.
Sorry once again for interrupting your thread...he was in a bit of a panic about being able to return on time.
Good luck with the sale of your equipment...you have some very tempting instruments and/or gear for sale...I'm sure it won't take long.
