I use the renowned interface "iConnectMidi 2+". It is particularly good for the iPad, but can equally be used for any PC or a Surface Pro. It has two USB ports and 2 pairs of 5-pole midi out/in connections. You can use a good master keyboard, e.g. a Roland A-800 pro, and connect it to one of the midi-in ports.

Your PA800 can be used as a controller, although it will not be as flexible as a master controller.

If the PA800 has a USB B connection to allow connection to a computer A connection, then plug a USB lead into the computer and see if it shows up in the sound devices as a Midi device, if it does than you are good to go. (Just remember that Midi only transmits and Receives data, not audio, which will require another lead from the sound card output of you computer into your PA800)

If USB doesn’t work, you can pick up a USB to Midi cable quite cheaply.

After that it’s down to reading the instruction manual for the PA800 and VST to get them to communicate. A good guide toe Midi can be found here

Hope this helps

Bill

Yes, any keyboard, with USB plug will work with the Surface Pro

Without a driver? I thought only "class-compliant" devices work without installing a driver.

He will probably also need a USB audio interface, as he has no MOXF with buildin audio interface

If they are not class compliant, he need to install the windows 8.1 driver from the manufacturer support website.
Personnaly, I use the Surface pro headphone audio out by Wasapi with vArranger. Works good.
