Today I will try my new Bose S1 Pro on a gig. I have used it at home for about 5 hours and it sounds pretty darn good. If it works out today I will be selling my Bose L1 Compact.
My gig today will be for about 75 people in a fairly large room - pretty average for my gigs these days so if it works today it will be good for my other gigs too. Anyway, I'll post the results later today. Might be able to post a video.

Deane, try to elevate it, so you can make a fair comparison to the compact. Placement is a big part of the effectiveness with Bose.
Are you using a stand?

My first gig with the Bose S1 Pro went really great! I was amazed at how much sound the S1 Pro produces. I ran both channels of the S1 Pro at the 10:00 position and my keyboard volumn also at 10:00 position. I also lowered the Bass and Treble levels of both channels. The pictures show the settings I used. The S1 Pro was on top of a grand piano and tilted back.

During the gig my wife walked around the room and her judgement was the S1 Pro does not have the same sound distribution qualities the the L1 Compact has. She said the sound up front was noticeably louder than the sound at the back. With my L1 Compact there is not much difference. I plan to call Bose tomorrow and ask about this.

The overall sound was very good except for the distribution issue.
I will use it again tomorrow on another gig. One great positive is the weight.

Deane, I have been looking at the S1 pro, my only concern is the low end, the bass. I would appreciate your opinion.

John,
I have to lower the bass. Today I used it again on s gig.
It is a kerper for me. The sound level is amazing
Today my room was very large and people in the back
Requested I lower the volume. Heck it was already
At the 9:00 position!

I have been using my Bose Compact for years and am trying to see what the advantages are. I see EQ and stereo connections. Is there a noticeable difference in sound dispersion compared to a line array, realizing that true stereo would mean two line arrays. You mentioned the unequal volume, but said the back of the room was too loud for some. Does this mean that the front of the room at the time was way too loud. Also, Johns question about bass, as the Bose Compact has plenty for my music.

I sure am happy that you are, just curious,

Bernie

Sorry, I reread your post and I think you were referring to lowering the bass volume.

Bernie,
It is a little early for me to answer your question about sound level in front vs in back. On my first gig I had the S1 Pro sitting on top of a grand piano and pointed up and the sound seemed to be louder in the front. On today's gig I had the S1 Pro sitting on my Rock-N-Roller cart about 6 inches above the ground and pointed up and the sound seemed to be louder in the back. The strange thing about this is I did not have the volume level set very high at either gig. I have to use it on several more gigs before feeling like I can answer your question. One interesting point, for both gigs I had the S1 Pro slightly in front of me and the sound that I was hearing seemed much louder than what I get with my L1 Compact in the same position. Strange. I have yet to talk to a Bose tech person about all of this.

My first thought was the fact that you have the unit in front of you, which might lead to a false perceived sound level, but your wife was checking the volume. I try and keep my Bose in back of me and slightly off to the side, as I have no monitor. I am sure you will get ironed out.

Today I spoke with a Bose technical support person. The S1-Pro and the L1 Compact have very little in common regarding sound distribution. Where the L1-Compact sounds pretty much the same regardless of where in the room you are located the S1 Pro will indeed be louder up front like many other speakers. So, my wife's findings on the two gigs were accurate - the sound was louder up front. As to why the sound appeared to be louder in the back on my second gig the rep could not explain. My guess is the folks just wanted to talk and didn't care about the music - it happens folks!

I'll post more findings about all of this as the month passes. By the way, the quality of the sound is outstanding!
