Don’t use Yamaha, but if you recorded a style into the on board sequencer, and then exported the SMF to your DAW, would it capture all the setup data?

My advice would be, if you find a workaround that works, don’t ignore it because you’d PREFER to do it a different way!

Arrangers aren’t workstations. They are rarely designed to give total flexibility in a studio environment. They tend to get designed to the level of the ‘average’ arranger user.

In your case, you might look around at some of the apps designed to be general purpose control surfaces on iPad or Surface, and see if anyone has programmed an SX series template yet. I can see MIDI easily able to call up Registrations (which would achieve what you want if you do the voice and effect edits in the SX first) but I can see considerable difficulty trying to use sysex to route the various Parts through whatever chain of FX you want (don’t forget, SX voices can be routed through several insert FX, not just one).

As a simple sound module, if you let the DAW call up the Registration, I think it’s likely you’ll get basic control (vol pan FX depths and stuff like that). But I shudder to think how complex the sysex is going to have to get to initialize a chain of effects on a certain Part. Far simpler to let the Registration do the heavy lifting then just address the Part as set up…

Again, no hands on experience here, just the way arrangers in general tend to get designed. But things have got MASSIVELY more complicated since the good ol’ days of calling up the Tone and setting chorus and reverb sends! Ah, for simpler times… 🥺😱
