First off, thanks to everyone for your thoughts on the passing of my Dad. I was the go-between him and this forum, as he had no computer. All the songs, tips, and advise on this Technics forum, I passed on to him. This forum made him a happy guy! Which brings me to my dilemma. I was only a casual user of the KN-7000, and only played this great keyboard on visits to his house. When I did play, I only ever used the basic features with built in styles. Now that I have inherited the 7000, and I'm trying to learn more, I am finding it a bit confusing. I have been playing a Yamaha for years, and in my opinion, is more user friendly. Example. With a PSR-3000, If I have a style on a media card, and want to load and play, I just select a style from any media, and boom the style is ready. If it contains voices for the right hand, the OTS is lit, and can be used if desired. With the KN-7000, I have a few styles from Bill Norrie's site that I wanted to try, and it took awhile, but I got the style to load and play.(Had to use a floppy, as the style does not appear on an SD card) Now what confuses me, is there a right hand voice included with the 4 variations? How do I find out? Do I set the music style arranger to panel? Do I need to set the panel to normal, or expand? I finally did find a rather suitable setup in one of the styles, and it included some right hand voices. But when I loaded up another style, I had to go through the whole procedure once again. MSA set up...panel memory set up. Yikes, I'm lost. There must be an easier way of loading and playing custom styles from media. All this panel memory, panel setup, composer copy, pattern copy is all too confusing for 'newbies'. Anyway, all I want to do is load and play some new styles with different right hand voices in the 4 variations,(MSA) (then save the best to memory). If anyone would care to go back to the basics, and simplify this procedure for me, I would be grateful. For now, I'll stick with the built in styles. Click a button, it loads and plays. MSA is setup, ready to go. Why can't this be done with styles on a card? I know, I need the "How Do I Do That" book Thank you. Larry ------------------ Larry SynthZone Map

Hi Larry, There are many ways to go about setting your 7000 up, and I’ll show you what I do. A very straight forward approach that works on my PSR 3000 too. In each of the 7K’s 3 primary banks, (A,Band C) save eight voices that suit a particular style of music. For example, my A has big band sounds, B has sound suitable for combos and C has orchestral voice es. Using the Normal setting save only the right 1 and 2 sounds. Just like on the 3K it will take a bit of tinkering to get a nice combination for some of the voices. Of course, give these settings a name and save to your SD card.
Now you are in a position to select any style and tempo and have 24 voices to choose from without any fuss. I find this simple setup provides a fun way to jam with friends and is an effective way to work out arrangement for recording. I guess MSA is a way to get started, but I like to make my own changes.
Enjoy your new instrument.
Frank

Thanks Rog, Good explanation. It's always easy when you know how. When Yamaha custom styles contain right hand recommended sounds the OTS light is lit. If not, the user must use their own right hand sounds. With Techncics, I don't think it's that automatic. One has to try and figure out if a custom style contains right hand sounds. Do I set the MSA to sound and rythmn or panel memory. If I use panel memory, do I use normal or expand? See what I mean? Too many decisions, and I'm left wondering if I'm using the custom style as it was intended to use. Anyway, I'll keep at it, until a light bulb goes on in my head. I'm sure it's easy to figure out. BTW...Audry, I never recieved an email from you. Please try again ------------------ Larry SynthZone Map

Larry, I'm sorry to hear about your father. I haven't been here in some time and I really get behind. If you want styles that are already tweaked and have different instrumental sounds, go to http://www.esnips.com/web/budwhipple/ and download any or all of the listings, unzip them, save them to a floppy and they will load ready to play as a sequenced song. You can delete the song and use the style, or simply don't load the sequencer file. There are a couple of hundred styles from everything but a KN7000, and are ready to go. It's a simple matter to change any of the instruments, left hand or right hand, intros and endings, and the fill-ins. Personally, instead of changing the instrument sets for each song, I keep a set of floppies handy with all different settings on them for any style of music, then I simply load what I want to hear. Fast and easy. Eleven disks with twenty different sound set-ups on each one. When you hear something you like, save it to a special floppy. All these years I just assumed you played a KN. Learn something new every day! So, good luck with your new keyboard and you already know where to look for help. [This message has been edited by Bud Whipple (edited 03-29-2008).]
