Hey hey Tony! Many thanks for your Chinese New Year wishes. I actually spent New Years Eve in Monterey celebrating with my family on a sumptious 8 course banquet my Mom cooked up, followed with sing-along music entertainment. I'm from a BIG family so New Years is the perfect excuse for yet another family renunion party. I have a couple of Chinese New Year related party gigs coming up and since this is the year of the ROOSTER, looking for an appropriate themed party song. So far, I'm planning on doing the "Chicken Dance". Anyone know of a specific ROOSTER song?

Scott

Yip yip. Thankfully still got plenty of older generation relatives to RECEIVE red envelopes ($) from. I of course had lots of fun passing out red envelopes to my cousin's kids too. - Scott

Hey - what happened to my "Rooster Song" post? Was it somehow offensive, and removed? I didn't think so ... hmmmmmmmm - a puzzlement !

UD: hmmm . . . the only Rooster Song mention I remember you posting was on the Gen Arranger forum: http://www.synthzone.com/ubbs/Forum37/HTML/010115.html

I'm still WAITING to hopefully get from you the lyrics & chords, or better yet, a leadsheet or a CD/MP3 recording of your Rooster tune so I might perform it at one my upcoming Chinese New Year Rooster party gigs. Whadda you say Uncle Dave? - Scott

I found the lyrics. It is apparently a campfire song.

The Rooster
We had some hens, no eggs would they lay,
We had some hens, no eggs would they lay.
My spouse said, “Honey, this isn’t funny.
We’re loosing money.” No eggs would they lay.
One day a rooster came into our yard,
He caught those hens right off of their guard.
They’re laying eggs now, just like they use ta,
Ever since that rooster came into our yard.
They’re laying eggs now, just like they use ta,
Ever since that rooster came into our yard.
We had a cow, no milk would she give, [Repeat.]
My spouse said, “Honey, this isn’t funny.
We’re loosing money.” No milk would she give.
One that rooster came into our yard,
He caught the cow right off of her guard.
She giving eggnog, that’s more than she use ta,
Ever since that rooster came into our yard.
She giving eggnog, that’s more than she use ta,
Ever since that rooster came into our yard.
We had a field, no crops would it grow . . . . We’re raising eggplant . . . .
We had a dog, no pups did she have . . . . She’s delivering pooched eggs . . . .
Me and my wife, no kids did we have . . . . We’re raising egg heads . . . .
We had a gum machine, no gum would it give . . . . We’re getting chiclets . . . .
We had a garden, no flowers would it grow . . . . We’re growing chickweed . . . .
We had some fish, but they wouldn’t grow . . . . We’re raising tuna, it’s the chicken of the sea . . . .
We had a car, but it wouldn’t run . . . . We have a yolkswagen . . .
We had a comedian, no laughs could he get . . . . He’s telling yokes now . . . .
We had a army, no battles did we win . . . . We’re getting shelled now . . . .
We had a cannon, but it wouldn’t fire . . . . We have no rooster . . . .

Another Chinese folk song about a rooster.

Some Shaanbei songs were sung simply for the pleasure of singing, with nonsense lyrics designed to make people laugh - and melodies designed to show off the vocal skills of the singer:

3. The Big Red Rooster

(verse 1)

Da hong tuir gongji mao tui'er tui
Chibushang xie dongxi bai paole ger tui!

Chorus
suor-la-sa-luo-luo suo-la-er-sai-ya-ha-hai lala [etc]
qia-ge ling-da la-la-ying-la-hai lala [etc.]
Yangliu ye'er, dongxia changqing!"
"ge-li-gu-ge, ge-li-gu-ge, yao-yao-ye, yi-yao-yao-yelala
"Guan ming deng zhao Ma Jia lai liao!"
qi-ling-ling ba-la-la "gai zi'er!" lala -
hu-la-la "Yangliu qing" ya-hua'er-hai!" lala

(verse 2)

Liang mi zi'er xi zhou ao bai cai
Ni cai shi meimei di xin shang ai

[Chorus:]

(verse 3)

Man tian di xingxing yi keke ming
Ren litou tiaoren jiu shu gege ni
(verse 1)

The big red rooster, with feath'ry legs
Ran 'round fer nothin', found nothin' to eat!

Chorus
suor-la-sa-luo-luo suo-la-er-sai-ya-ha-hai lala [etc]
qia-ge ling-da la-la-ying-la-hai lala [etc.]
Summer 'n' winter, willow leaves are green!"
"ge-li-gu-ge, ge-li-gu-ge, yao-yao-ye, yi-yao-yao-yelala
Watch the lanterns shining bright! Here comes the Ma family!"
qi-ling-ling ba-la-la "Change the words!"
hu-la-la "The willow leaves are green!" "ya-hua'er-hai! lala

( verse 2)
Cabbage stews in the rice porridge pot
But you're the only one Little Sister loves.

[Chorus]

(verse 3)

Whole sky's filled with bright bright stars
Out of all the people on earth,I choose you, Brother!

Jerry, many thanks for supplying the lyrics & chords to the "Rooster Song". Definitely sounds like a fittingly fun song for the occasion. Anyone know where I can hear an MP3/midi of it so I can figure out the melody?

The chinese lyrics to Big Red Rooster looks too challenging for me to attempt on such short notice, especially cuz it's in Mandarin, but I suppose if nonsense words are acceptable, one could fake it. On second thought, I'm not one for faking things.
