I think the stigma (among professional musicians) comes from the fact that 1) most don't consider it a legitimate instrument; 2) very few mainstream professional musicians use them (or even know what they are ); and 3) they assume that if you're using one, you can't play. And yes, I believe the stigma is still there. I think this is borne out by the fact that pro's refuse to embrace them, even tentatively.

This does not reflect my personal feelings, just my opinion about 'why the stigma?'.
